Robin North Awarded $10,000 Unrestricted Working Assumptions Project Grant for The Garcitas Community: Deep Roots, Buried Histories

Robin North was selected as one of six recipients of the 2025 Working Assumptions Project Grant from nearly 600 applicants nationwide, receiving $10,000 to support The Garcitas Community: Deep Roots, Buried Histories. Rooted in Working Assumptions’ focus on family, photography, and care, North’s project examines Texas Freedom Colonies through the families whose acts of care have kept these communities legible across generations. Grounded in Black geographies, the work brings together photography, family archives, descendant knowledge, and relationships to land to show how families continue to care for place, sustain memory, and preserve the histories of communities they built and continue to maintain.
